My main occupation at the moment - and I'm not kidding, involving many calendars and even a spreadsheet - is trying to figure out the girls' extra-curricular activities.
Chamonix is quite exceptional, it seems, in the number of subsidized activities that are offered to school kids. I've already mentioned the Wednesday sports on offer, but we now have to negotiate all the sports offered by the Maison de Sports (mass sign-up this Saturday), where we've got our eye on figure skating, tennis, climbing and the alpine ski school there.
Then there are the music and dance classes offered by the town. There is an incredible 'atelier decouverte' where the students are introduced to FOURTEEN instruments over the year (including things like the accordion, tuba and classic guitar) but as that changes day and location every week depending on the teacher, I think we're going to have to give that one a miss. Instead, I'm going to check out the kids' choir, which comes along with an hour of week of 'music introduction'.
THEN, there are the courses offered by the Maison de Jeunesse et Culture, also heavily subsidized, where the girls can do theatre, and also art classes. And Anna can do a circus class once a week!
So clearly I'm in grave danger of over scheduling the kids, but I'm finding it hard to rein myself in since a) everything is very cheap because heavily subsided b) everything is within walking distance c) we're only here for a year so I want to take full advantage of everything on offer and finally d) it would be extra French for the girls.
Extra-curricular activities are also a little more attractive because of the lack of homework - suddenly we've been freed from the hour plus homework we struggled through with Anna last year (and would have been looking forward to more of the same with Indra in grade 1) but here the attitude seems to be that less is more, so even though school doesn't finish until 4pm, there seems to be more time to do fun stuff before dinner.
So it seems we're spoilt for choice - a rather nice problem to have.
In the meantime, I'm off for my fourth hike of the week (up to Plan Lechat) and Toby is currently training for the 50km race he has signed up for next week. Got to take advantage while the girls are actually in school...
So much fun to read your adventures so far! Thank you for posting
