My first solo hike

So you might have expected this entry to be labelled 'School Day 3' (since I was clearly on a bit of a roll with the school theme,) but no. This is France, and therefore the kids were at home all day because they don't go to school on Wednesdays. I It was very disconcerting to have swung into the school rhythm only to have them home again - it kept feeling like a week-end.  It also meant that everywhere was packed with parents, carting their children along on their errands (mental note: never try to grocery shop on a Wednesday).

Funnily enough, the principal of Zoe's school said that she tried to set up an exchange to go and work in Canada for a year, until, as she said, she realized that 'Canadian teachers don't get any holidays'. Now, since most people in Canada envy teachers their generous holiday allotment (I should know, I am one of the envied ones) I did find that funny, until I thought about how after a four-day week, and two weeks off in October, two weeks in December, two weeks in February, two weeks in April and eight weeks off in the summertime, then yes, I guess the Canadian teachers' work load would look a little heavy to a French teacher. (And yes, we will have lots of holiday time with the kids this year...)

The girls' Wednesday activities (organized by the town for a small fee) will start in two weeks. Anna and Indra are going to be introduced to 'saute a ski', 'velo tout terrain', and 'rando' (hiking), and Zoe is going to get skating, rock climbing and tennis. (Keep in mind that Zoe has just turned four... no wonder everyone is sport-obsessed in this town.) Obviously this will just be a 'taster' of the sports, but I think the girls are going to love it.

Anyway, my highlight of the week was doing my first solo hike when the girls actually were in school. Just about five minutes behind our chalet is an incredible network of gorgeous hiking trails, and I did part of the 'Petit Balcon'. And the weather was beautiful, so I got some fabulous views this time. I was in heaven.

 Tired of this view yet?

Pretty flowers on the way up
