(Holiday excitement)
So we're now officially back from our 'holiday' in Tuscany, just in time for the girls to start back at school tomorrow. Of course, since this whole year feels like a holiday, it didn't feel like we really needed a holiday, but heck, if the school closes for two weeks (they had already been at school for a whole six weeks after all), what were we to do? A holiday it was.
The first week was spent in Chamonix with Toby's sister Sophie and the cousins Ruby and Mo, and also our neighbours Pete and Les and their kids, and then we spent five days at Toby's aunt's and uncle's place near Lucca in Tuscany. That deserves a blog entry - or three or four - to itself, so be prepared for some milking for all it's worth.
In the meantime, the 'home' part of the holiday saw plenty of activities every day. More climbing at the Gaillands, skating at the local rink, an afternoon at the 'luge' activity park (a treat that had been promised to the girls since our arrival here in August), and then a rather exciting (read: occasionally heart-stopping and stressful, as I tried to stop the girls from sliding off the path in their inadequate and almost treadless running shoes and hurtling to their certain deaths down the sheer cliff face) snowy hike across Montenvers for an overnight in a mountain hut. And the week finished off with a grand Halloween extravaganza finale.
The luge was fun, although perhaps we slightly overdid the build-up - it's basically a small roller coaster down the mountain, but theoretically you're 'driving' your luge and so can brake, accelerate etc. In reality, even if you didn't brake once the whole way down you still wouldn't be going that super fast, but it was plenty fast for me. Zoe's quivering excitement (see picture above) as we went up every time (we got about four or five go's each) and exclamations of, 'I love this SO MUCH, oh my goodness, this is AMAZING, OOOOOHHHH' was worth the price of admission alone.
Toby and Indie, ready for the ride
Toby's big finish
Anna and Sophie
Me and Indie, just about luge'd out
